I went sailing this weekend on my friend Peter’s new boat. I should correct that and say that one afternoon was spent sailing, the rest of it was spent avoiding the rainstorms and the toilet-shower combo in my cabin. Much as I appreciate the self-contained universe of a sailboat, which is pretty darn efficient and amazing, I just can’t rough it like that. The thin mattress, the faucet that transforms into a showerhead, the toilet that you have to pump to flush. I’m a city girl. I’ve never even been camping my whole life.
But his boat is beautiful (besides the toilet-shower which just grosses me out) and the actual sailing part was fun and relaxing. However, I’m sick now! I can’t tell if it’s from getting caught in the rain over the weekend or just being around way more people than I usually am in Paris. I think my immune system isn’t used to so many germs since I spend a lot more time alone back in France.
Anyway, I’m trying to kick it with some crazy juice cocktails and I have to hit Whole Foods today (yay!) for some zinc and echinacea.
As for John Mayer…

Douchebag, oui?
What is up with this guy? He admits he’s a douchebag and seems to live his private life like it’s a public blog. I was kind of creeped out when I read that he was blabbing about his breakup with Jennifer Aniston. Not that I’m a fan of hers, but she’s clearly a private person. Does he really need to disrespect her by chatting up the paparazzi and claiming he’s the one who did the breaking up? (Pretty much everyone seems to believe she dumped him.)
So he ended his tour this weekend and onstage, he blabs about how he talked to someone recently and there were a lot of tears during the conversation. Obviously, everyone’s going to assume it was Jen Aniston he was crying with. Ugh. He’s like a high school girl scorned. Has he never heard how discretion is the better part of valor?
Why do women continue to date him? I mean, I get that he’s a fantastic musician (which is undeniable) but he’s such a, yes, douche. I suppose his one saving grace is that he knows it.

“discretion is the better part of valor.” I don’t know if that’s already a popular expression, but I’ve personally never heard it put so eloquently. I’ve been thinking about that idea a lot. Thanks for giving it some words.

I wish I could take credit for it, but someone far more eloquent than I put it into words. What’s funny is that only in the past few years have I finally understood what it meant myself. When I was a kid, I was just like, “Huh?”
