Super Bowl, Super Tuesday, Back in New York (Super!)

I got back into NYC on Super Bowl Sunday and quickly discovered that the place I thought I’d be subletting wasn’t going to happen. I swear the Craigslist ad said $1100 for the month. I get there and the guy informs me it’s $1100 per week! Um… not going to happen (and only in New York!) So I’m shacking up with Peter for the moment while I figure out my next move. It’s strange to be homeless in what used to be my hometown. And I’ve gotten used to the beauty of Paris, so the sudden immersion back into the East Village isn’t as nice as I thought it would be.

Peter and I caught the last 3 minutes of the Super Bowl, when the Giants made that miraculous, winning play. Impressive. I kind of appreciated that the gorgeous cad quarterback (and boyfriend of Gisele) Tom Brady did not get his perfect, fairytale ending. Instead, the winning moment went to the far-less-telegenic, non-supermodel-dating, and rather dorky Eli Manning. The underdog story is a classic for a reason. And Eli actually seems sweet and earnest. But what do I know? I’m not really a football fan.

As for Super Tuesday today… No, I didn’t vote. I was in the studio so didn’t have time, which is probably a lame excuse. Being in France, I’ve been a little far removed from American politics, though I am a little sorry I didn’t vote since they’re saying this is the first time a New York Democratic primary has mattered since Woodrow Wilson. Nothing like actually feeling like your vote matters. I guess I just don’t feel well-informed enough on the candidates and again, that’s a lame excuse and completely my fault. I’ll go out on a limb and say that I’d probably choose Hillary over Barack because of her experience, her sheer force of will, hard work, intellect and yes, because she is a woman.

Somehow the woman card is resonating more with me than the minority one. In a way, I feel like this vote will showcase who’s more oppressed in our world: women or minorities? (Lucky me, I’m both!) I honestly believe that so much of the venom directed at Hillary is age-old sexism. And I have to wonder, if Barack were exactly who he is—young, charismatic and rather inexperienced—but white, would he have gotten the attention he has and even reached Super Tuesday? I don’t know. I mean, I really don’t know. But then again, a real change, from the Bush/Clinton eras could be exactly what America needs.

The dream ticket really would be Hillary/Barack, wouldn’t it?

In any case, it’s an exciting, one could even say super, time to be back in New York. Now if only I could find a sublet!
