My Nouvel Amour

It had to happen sometime. I knew I’d fall in love again. After countless trans-Atlantic flights, I was tired of my rather heavy constant companion—my 17″ monster of a PowerBook. It’s not that I didn’t appreciate its gorgeous widescreen that was bigger than the TV I had in my NYC apt, but I (or my shoulders, to be more precise) could no longer take the weight of transporting the darn thing around. There goes another lesson in biggest not always being the best.

So what does Steve Jobs do but introduce a new Apple product yesterday that’s turned me on more than anything else in recent history, including the iPhone…

iPhone

But perhaps not James McAvoy in Atonement.

The Macbook Air weighs 3 pounds, is 0.16″ to 0.76″ thin and looks like a spaceship with is tapered edges. A closet sci-fi geek like me can’t help but swoon. Its slick design appeals to the aesthete in me, too (but that’s typical for Apple.) And at $1799, it seems like a bargain compared to what my PowerBook cost, although I’m reading posts from other people saying it’s expensive. I think they’re PC guys.

This is the first time I’ve actually wanted to run out and buy something immediately—in my life, I think. But cooler heads are telling me I should wait a few months to see what bugs need to be sorted out and so on. In any case, I’m waiting until I’m back in the States (both for the better exchange rate and the American keyboard.) But til then, a girl can dream, can’t she?
